Why Music Matters by Julian Bowen

Do you know or are aware of music’s importance and why it matters in your life?

These questions have been asked by music students and music enthusiasts. I decided to write this article to answer these questions. Why is Music important? Why does it Matter as a child and as an adult?

Why Music?

Music is important because it can stimulate the mind. Sitting and listening to the harmonies, the rhythms, the sound, and its color, all relating to each other and how they are produced creates an incredible experience beyond this world. Music takes you places where you have never been before.

It provides an escape from the daily activities of life. It brings people and families together as they sit around a table or in a concert hall listening to their favorite singers, choirs, instrumentalists, and music composed by their favorite composers.

Why does Music matter to Children?

Children listening to music from an early age helps them with their language skills and their motor skills development.

It is the rhythm of the music that also helps children develop coordination, their timing, which is very important for developing motor skills.

Learning music at an early age will have many long-term benefits. The child will develop cognitive abilities such as memory recall, which will be beneficial to them later in life.

A child playing in an ensemble or performing on stage brings amazing exhilaration to them. Their self-image and self-confidence are immediately enhanced having accomplished their goals.

I can say that the same emotions and feelings of accomplishment apply to adults. The feeling of achieving, reaching your goals, and realizing your dream is what motivates them. The child within the adult comes alive as he or she sits and listens to music being performed by their peers, their children, and grandchildren.

It is always a Joy and pleasure to see this sense of accomplishment in my students. Having been given such an amazing talent to play, sing or perform music, I can come to one conclusion, that music really matters and therefore its importance in one’s life should never be underestimated.
